Our product is going to be a both a concept and a television advertisement. Our concept is GAMS (get a man scan) and this will be promoted by our television advertisement. The idea of creating a concept was made because concepts tend to increase the amount people donate and the popularity of the charity, for example Think Pink, which is was popular as soon as it was created and is still popular today. When creating the concept we looked at our target audience (the male population of Australia) and thought about what attracted them and captures their attention. The ideas that came up when we were discussing different concepts were to use an acronym. We could get a word that men are interested in and turn it into an acronym to raise awareness about cancer. Words that came up were RUGBY, SPORT, GAMES, and CRICKET. When trying to find words that the letters could stand for in each of these words nothing exciting came up. However when we tried to use the word GAMES, we came up with Get a Man Scan. The only problem was that we couldn’t figure out what word to use for the letter E. That’s when we decided that maybe we didn’t need an E. We could create a new word that eventually people would memorise and recognise when they heard it. The word GAMS also sounds like an Australian word that we could imagine Australian men saying. This was when GAMS was created. It was a manly way of saying that you were going to get a man scan and it would also raise awareness to the many men that didn’t believe that men could get breast cancer. The television advertisement was necessary to promote this new concept and get attention and recognition.

The major theme that GAMS is trying to convey is that men can get breast cancer. It is always safe to check if you have it. GAMS can raise awareness about this fact and will inform men to get checked. This will also help them feel more sympathetic to the cause and this will be more likely to donate to the foundation or get a scan. The benefits of this concept are that women will still be aware of the fact that they can get breast cancer however men will now also be aware. This will cause the amount of people supporting our cause and donating to double because now both women and men will be donating.

Previous marketing strategies have been that the McGrath foundations have held websites and schools have donated towards them. They have also sold products however this didn’t receive much attention. Our marketing strategy (GAMS) should last for at least five to ten years. It does not necessarily have to be aired for five to ten years as this is definitely an excessive amount of time. However the idea could be kept on by other methods. Such as items that McGrath sponsors are sold could have the GAMS logo printed on them. Or at the sports events on posters, on spray painted on the grass playing fields for sports such as rugby or on the uniforms of Australian athletes.

If the word and concept GAMS is shown regularly in several places, it will definitely become recognised. The fact that people know what GAMS is will keep people helping the McGrath foundation. For example men might run a marathon to raise money for the foundation or even hold sporting events in which they can sell tickets for. Men can do many things to help raise money for the McGrath foundation. Promoting the new concept of GAMS is the way to get their full attention.

Price

Price

The product GAMS doesn’t necessarily have a price as we are not selling anything. Technically we are promoting a concept. The only worry is how much the advertisement will cost to air so many times on television. We can only hope that we money we receive as donations as a cause of this exceed the amount it costs to air. This means that the only way that we can raise money for the McGrath foundation is by making sure that people donate more than we paid to air the commercial. The price of a television commercial can vary depending on when it is aired. There is a wide range of the price of a thirty second advertisement. However we air it at the right time and the right channels we can get the most attention. When people recognise GAMS, thanks to this television advertisement, we can sell products and sponsor sports people and get relatively high charity and money for the McGrath foundation. The more men are aware of breast cancer the easier it will be to raise money for the McGrath foundation. The more people know and understand what GAMS is, and the longer we can hold the concept for, the quicker we can raise the amount it cost to the air the advertisement. Then we can easily raise much more for the McGrath foundation than we have raised before.

Target Audience

Target Audience

Our target audience is all the men in Australia. We would like men to know that they too can get breast cancer and that they are also at risk. Using the new concept GAMS ( get a man scan) we can also influence them to get checked in case they so have breast cancer or any other type of cancer.Because our target audience are males we will promote the concept of GAMS as a manly thing and advertise it in such a way that men will see it almost everywhere they like to go. For example men like sporting events such as rugby, soccer and cricket. Having the GAMS logo on sporting uniforms of Australian athletes will promote GAMS as a manly thing and men will be more attracted to the cause and more sympathetic. Other places that GAMS can be shown to advertise for our target audience would be on the grass at sporting events or on television advertisements during commercial breaks of the footy show, the news and channel seven sports. Showing men that they too, can get breast cancer will make the men in Australia understand that they too can get breast cancer and are also at risk. This will help men to contribute to the cause and donate. We could even advertise so that men would run a marathon for the McGrath foundation with the concept of GAMS or play sport and ask people to buy tickets. All the money from these events could go to the McGrath foundation. Advertising this new concept would urge men to become more involved by either, giving money to the charity, holding or running for sporting events to raise money and awareness or paying and donating to spectate. The men in Australia are our target audience as it will definitely help to get more donations and sympathy from the males in our country.

Filming Process

Our product is the concept GAMS. This will be promoted by our television advertisment. This is the video that was created.

This was made by a series of steps. First Emily and I thought about the characters that we would need to put into the video. Because our target audience was men, we decided that putting men into the advertisement would be an obvious choice. The next step was thinking about which men to use in our advertisement. We knew that neither of us had time to film it on the weekend so we would have to film in or after school hours. This meant that male teachers would be starring in our ad. Thinking about the teachers that may be able to participate we emailed Mr Dredge, Mr Boyle, Mr Caldwell and Mr Powell. In the end Mr Dredge and Mr Powell we happy to help us in the making of this commercial. After this Emily and I wrote a script and organised a time when both teachers were available. We were all available on Thursday morningtea.

Emily and I received an email saying that Mr Dredge was sorry but was unable to make it to morning tea as he had to leave school grounds until lunch. Luckily Mr Powell was also available at lunch so we were able to film then.

Finding that many areas at lunch were very noisy we seeked to find a space that was quiet, had the right light and wasnt extremely hot. We found this place just in front of the art rooms (where the film was set). After filming many takes and going over and over the script we finally did the advertisement. We used iMovie to film it and shared it as a Quicktime file. This quicktime file is how we used it as a powerpoint and how we put it onto the blog. Still using iMovie i cut out the parts that were unneccessary and or useless.

I competely enjoyed the experience of making a video and in the process was extremely excited and enthusiastic. I would like to make more advertisements or movies of some sort as i find it something worth pursueing and very enjoyable. I would like to thank Mr Dredge and Mr Powell a million time for helping us with our assignment.

Although it was not neccesary we decided that we would make a video of all the bloopers. We found them veyr amusing and thought that you might too. Using iMovie i cut parts of it out so that it wouldnt be so long and you would only have to watch the funny parts.

Our Script:

The script we wrote was based on the concept of GAMS. The advertisement had to get the attention of men. We attemted this through humour in our script. When trying to get the message across we involved the different points and important facts into the scipt so that the audience would understand the concept of GAMS.

A: Hey what’s up Mr. D?

B: Oh nothing much just gonna get my GAMS

A: Your what?

B: My GAMS!

A: What are you on about?

B: You know? Get a Man Scan? GAMS? Men can get breast cancer you know

A: Oh yeah right

B: No seriously ! You should get yourself checked too, go get your GAMS

A: Look at me man, I don’t have man boobs ! ( looking down and holding his arms in a muscular position)

B: You don’t need boobs to have breast cancer

A: really?

B: Yeah, just to be safe all men should get their GAMS

A and B: (both facing the camera) get your GAMS today!!

Blog Entry For week one

This week Emily and I formed a group of two. Mrs King advised against it so that we would have less work to do. However we decided that we would work together on the weekend to make up for it. We decided to work together because we have had a lot of experience in working together and work well and efficiently together. We also think about things differently, creatively and critically. Because of this our assignment will have all aspects to think about and will be well rounded. The next thing our pair did was as a group. We completed our brainstorm of NPI's. An NPI is a non-profit institution. Our brainstorm included the Salvation Army, Red Cross, RSCPCA, Gold Coast Childrens Foundation the McGrath foundation and the Breast Cancer Foundation. In the end we both choose the McGrath foundation as we both felt strongly about the cause and felt passionate about it. Then as a group we found the McGrath foundation website and reserached the foundraising techniques that McGrath Foundation already uses. This is the website :http://www.mcgrathfoundation.com.au/

Then we brainstormed about the different things we could do as a group to promote our NPI and a product that we would wish to sell or advertise. some of these were :

o A television advertisement
o A sponsorship campaign
o A new product to sell

In the end we actually choose a concept (GAMS- Get a Man Scan). And we choose to promote this concept by creating a television advertisement.

I felt that all the tasks were successful to some extent. Everything worked out and we both agreed on everything in the end. For example when we were choosing which NPI to do we couldnt decide until we found the McGrath Foundation. With this NPI we both agreed. We also were able to decide that we should make a concept and a television advertisement. In the beginning Emily thought we should sell a product and i believed that we should make a television advertisement. But it turned out alright as we decided that making a concept was a fantastic idea. At the moment i dont think there is anything we can improve on, as we are not too far into th assignment yet and there have not been any critical errors.

This week i believe that we were both effective and hard working. We worked well together and let each other understand why we wanted to do anything in particular. We listened to each other's ideas and logically decided what was the best option for us. I believe that we both worked well this week as a gruop as there was no individual work.

Blog Entry for week 2

This is my blog entry for the week. The tasks that i completed this week as an individual were that i started my online blog. This is'nt much but at this stage of the assignment there is not a lot of individual work to be done. Most of the work has to be done as a group. I went to Emily's house on Saturday to do work on our assignment. We decided that our target audience is the male population of Australia. We decided this because not many men know that they are also at risk of getting breast cancer. This is providing information as well as raising awareness. By targeting males we will still hold our women donaters as they know they are at risk of getting breast cancer however we will also have the support of the male population as they too will know that they are at risk.

All of this week however Emily was away from school sick and i was left to try to figure out how we could improve our assignment. When this happened i wrote our target audience. I thought that this was successful and i did well on it. However i think our group could have benefited if Emily was at school during hte time when we could be creating out project. Overall i think we did prety well for the circumstances.
